TOM LUCY - COMEDIAN
Picture the scene, it’s the early 90s, your channel hopping in the hope of finding something interesting to watch before the witching hour, you come across a little known US comedy show called Seinfeld, it aired on BBC 2, the time slot kept changing and if you were lucky you might catch it. It shone a bright shiny light on a new kind of humour not seen on these shores before. It had a cynicism and nihilistic quality and observed life’s quirks and irritations. Us Brits are masters of self-deprecation and mocking satire and Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David were giving us it in spades.
Fast forward to 2024 and the comedian Tom Lucy, his comedy heroes are the above said US comedians with Chris Rock thrown in for good measures. Sometimes the humour makes you recoil first and laugh second, being taken out of your comfort zone is part of the experience. Observational comedy is Tom’s bag, he started at the tender age of 16. This career path was set in stone when he was signed by an agent at the age of 18 and has never looked back. His style of comedy is personal, an observation on whatever's happening in his life, he admits he was quite irritating back then and stand-up was the release he needed! A 16 year old boy sharing his inner thoughts and observations sounds like comedy gold to us.
Tom has been performing stand-up now for the last 10 years, and has toured the world with his own headline shows as well as playing huge stadium gigs opening for Jack Whitehall, Micheal McIntyre and Aziz Ausari. His university of life experience saw him playing three sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Festival. Like most jobs, he has a love-hate relationship with gigging, you need to take a step back and live your life, then get back on that stage and bare all.
The dark art of the Podcast was just a pipe dream back in the 90’s but this medium is something that a lot of younger comedians have embraced whole heartedly. Trekking up and down the A1 playing working mans clubs is no longer the rights of passage it use to be. Tom hosts Private Parts podcast alongside Jamie Laing “It’s an amazing format to find an audience, instead of wondering how many seats you can fill!”
So what’s next for Mr Lucy, earlier this year he wrote the script for the Brits and the hosts Clara Amfo, Roman Kemp and Maya Jama became his mouth piece. Writing for other people and writing projects are high on the list for the future, as well as getting back onto the stage to hook back onto that adrenaline drip.
