A Collar of Distinction: How One Shirt Changed My Posture and Possibly My Life

I don’t usually write reviews for shirts. I regard clothing as something that happens to me rather than something I actively participate in. Like weather. Or relatives. But every now and then, life throws you a surprise, like a perfectly ripe avocado or a seat on a train next to someone who doesn’t speak, smell, or overshare. This is what happened when I met the Aubin Hessle Button Down Shirt.

First, the fit. My torso, like Britain’s rail network, is both longer than you expect and slightly unpredictable in its contours. And yet the Hessle shirt wraps itself around my midsection like it was tailored by a benevolent ghost with a tape measure and low expectations. It fits. Properly. Not in that spray-on way that says, “I own a yacht and an opinion about everything,” but in a relaxed, understated, “Yes, I do my own taxes” kind of way.

The fabric—good heavens, the fabric. It’s the sort of cloth that makes you want to touch your own shoulder repeatedly in public, like you’re reassuring yourself that yes, you are still wearing it and no, this isn’t a dream. It’s soft but not flimsy, crisp but not scratchy. It’s as if someone took a flannel shirt and sent it to finishing school.

Now, let’s talk buttons. These are not your average plasticky, whisper-of-a-fastening buttons. These are buttons of intent. Each one is stitched on with the defiant permanence of a Victorian lighthouse keeper. And they do their job admirably: namely, keeping your modesty intact even after a generous lunch.

Stylistically, the shirt walks that fine line between “I’ve made an effort” and “I’m not trying too hard,” which, frankly, is all any of us really want. I wore it to a casual dinner and was mistaken for someone with a pension plan. I wore it to a Zoom call and was asked if I had “stepped up my game.” I wore it to the pub and someone said, “That’s a nice shirt,” in a tone so sincere I briefly lost my footing.

In conclusion, the Aubin Hessle Button Down is not just a shirt. It is a lifestyle upgrade disguised as menswear. It’s the kind of garment that makes you stand a little taller, sigh a little less, and wonder if maybe, just maybe, you should iron things more often.

Highly recommended. Would wear again. In fact, I’m wearing it now. Please address me accordingly.
